In year 2018, cooperating with the Forestry Bureau in Keerqinzuoyihou Qi, Tongliao, MTP contributed to the ecological restoration in three plots of sandy land by planting a mix of Pinus sylvestris L. var. mongolica Litv. (scotch pines), Acer mono (maples), willows, phellodendron amurens and caragana microphylla Lam. The main species is scotch pine. Maple trees were planted as the windbreak. In part of the desertified land inside, caraganas were planted. Willows and p. amurenses spread out over the plot.
The south side of this plot is near the sandstone road. The plot is mainly used as replenish land for defective seedlings in the previous years. The sides of the road are dominated by broad-leaved trees, such as maples, poplars and elms.In the middle, there are mainly pines which are 4 years old seedlings and some poplars. Part of the pines near the road were planted in year 2017, the seedlings are big.The survival rate is 85%, and the average height of the trees is 0.92m with highest height being 3m. The average basal diameter is 2.33cm and the maximum is 4.5cm.
From the image above, we can see that the first around of planting went very well, and most seedlings are germinated. The terrain is relatively simple, but the area is vast, and most areas are far away from the road. This causes difficulties in care.
According to statistics, the main problem of the forest is seedling defects. Among them, the loss of seedlings accounted for 95.45% of the problematic seedlings, making up 14.31% of the total number of seedlings. That means, the major problem is either seedling defects or the occurrence of seedling death during the initial planting.
